- planned roadworks and major events
- driving around cyclists and pedestrians
Birmingham has a Clean Air Zone. If you drive in Birmingham city centre, you may need to pay a clean air charge or you’ll get a fine.
If you’re driving to a bus or train station or tram stop, you can use one of our park and ride sites. Most of them are free.
Help reduce congestion
There’s a lot of work going on in the West Midlands to improve the way we travel. This includes:
- improving bus routes
- extending the tram route
- building HS2 - Britain’s new high-speed railway
This work means roads will be busier than normal. You can help reduce the amount of traffic by:
- changing the time of your journey - avoid peak times if you can
- use public transport instead
- walk or cycle for shorter journeys
- use a different route - travel apps like Waze and Google Maps can help you plan one
You can also reduce your carbon emissions by:
- walking or cycling
- using public transport
- driving an electric car
Road Safety
Regional road casualty figures show that between 2017 and 2021 there were 193 killed and seriously injured road casualties involving a goods vehicle.
Far too many road users are killed or injured in collisions involving someone who is at work. Road safety is a shared responsibility.
TfWM has teamed up with National Highways and Driving for Better Business (DfBB) to offer guidance and support to local businesses & organisations by demonstrating the significant business benefits of managing road-related risk more effectively.
The DfBB scheme offers access to free online tools, information, and resources tailored to help local businesses with staff who drive for work. Its aim is to reduce work-related road risk.
