Door-to-door services

Keeping you connected

Ring and Ride

If you find it very difficult to use public transport because of your disability and live in one of the seven West Midlands metropolitan district councils, then you should be able to benefit from our Ring and Ride service. Ring and Ride is a door-to-door service and has been running for over 30 years – one of the largest such services in the world! The minibuses used have ramps and lifts, so if you’re a wheelchair user or find steps difficult, you can easily use the service.

It operates on Monday to Saturday from 8.00am to 11.00pm, excluding Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and Bank Holiday Mondays. We do operate a limited service on Sundays. You can get to local destinations in your neighbourhood and up to half a mile into an adjoining area. A limited cross-boundary service will allow you to travel beyond the half-mile limit, to anywhere in operating areas adjoining your own. When travelling you can take a companion with you, but you just need to book in advance. You may also take dependent children with you.

How to register and book trips

To register, contact the office for the area in which you live. Visit Ring and Ride Website. If you’re unsure as to which area you live in, please ring the Ring and Ride Head Office on 0121 327 8128. Once registered, you should be able to book a trip by ringing the booking line telephone number for your area.

Tell the operator your registration number, where you want to go and when. If they are able to accommodate your request, they’ll confirm it there and then. If one or more parts of the journey can’t be provided at the time requested, you’ll be offered an alternative time.

If you have a hearing problem and can’t use the booking lines, contact Ring and Ride on the Minicom number 0121 359 0593, and you’ll be advised on how to make the booking. You can book a trip up to 24 hours in advance and can also book next day trips via email.

If you live in Birmingham and Solihull, email Birmingham@ringandride.org.

For Coventry, email Coventry@ringandride.org.

For the Black Country, email BlackCountry@ringandride.org.

Fares

Travelling on Ring and Ride costs £1.20 per journey (single trip). Children under five are free and children aged between five and 16 will pay £1.10. The fares are higher (£2 per journey) on Sundays and after 7:00pm Monday to Saturday its 2.20. Companions who aren’t registered users need to pay £2.20 each way, children pay £1.10 and there’s no charge for infants.

Community transport

There are community transport operators (GAG Pages 20-21) in all seven districts of the West Midlands. They offer minibus and wheelchair accessible vehicles for hire to community groups.

Because community transport operators are non-profit making, charges for the services are much less than other commercial providers.

Taxis

You can book a Taxi or a Private Hire Vehicle in advance to get to your destination. Taxis are either ordinary cars or black cabs, depending on the area and the operator. Ordinary cars can be difficult to get into and have limited space to store a wheelchair. Accessible black cabs have more space and are fitted with ramps, bright colour contrasting handrails and other features. Drivers of Taxis and Private Hire Vehicles are legally required to carry Assistance Dogs at no extra charge. If you’ve had an unpleasant experience and wish to complain about a licence holder, please contact the relevant licensing office. (GAG Page 68-70) They can also give you information on different taxi operators in your area.
