Changes to access for pedestrians, bus users and drivers

The next phase of the project to extend the tram to Wolverhampton railway station will get underway on 18 March 2018.

The Midland Metro Alliance, working on behalf of the West Midlands Combined Authority, will continue its work on the extension from the existing tram route just before the current terminus at Wolverhampton St. George’s, to the railway station.

Pipers Row will be closed to vehicular traffic during the construction and it is anticipated that this second phase of the works will be completed in summer 2018 when the road will reopen.

As part of the works, there will be changes to the city centre for bus users, drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

There will be changes to how and what type of vehicles can temporarily access certain roads within the city centre, during the works

  • Pipers Row - will be closed to all traffic.

  • Market Street – the bus gate will be removed and there will be access for all vehicles.

  • Tower Street – will remain one-way but vehicles will need to enter Tower Street from Market Street. Vehicles can turn left (road will be temporarily widened) onto the far left hand side of Pipers Row to turn left into Castle Street. Vehicles can enter the NCP car park from Tower Street and exit left (one-way) onto Castle Street. Access for all vehicles.

  • Queen Street – will be accessed from Market Street, one-way. Light vehicles only (less than 7.5T) will be able to turn onto Pipers Row to turn into Berry Street.  Vehicles over 7.5T not permitted due to tight turn into Pipers Row.

  • Princess Street (between Queen Street and Berry Street) – will no longer be pedestrianised and will have a bus gate for the duration of the works. One-way access for buses, taxis, private hire, cyclists, HGVs 7.5 tonnes and above only. The cycle route will continue to be in use but will be against the flow of this permitted traffic.

Detailed below are the changes that pedestrians (people walking) and cyclists need to consider when travelling within the city centre

  • Pipers Row - there will be no pedestrian access on the NCP car park side of the road, between Tower Street and Castle Street. There will be pedestrian access on the opposite side of the road. There will be crossing points for pedestrians between the Crown and County Court and Police Station and between Wolverhampton Bus Station and the Premier Lodge Aparthotel.

  • Market Street – the bus gate will be removed and there will be access for all vehicles. This will make the road busier to cross.

  • Tower Street – will remain one-way but traffic will approach from Market Street (left) and not from Pipers Row.

  • Princess Street (between Queen Street and Berry Street) – will no longer be pedestrianised. There will also be a bus gate for the duration of the works. One-way access for buses, taxis, private hire, HGVs 7.5 tonnes and above and cyclists only. The cycle route (towards Market Street) will continue to be in use but will be against the flow of this permitted traffic. The pedestrian crossing at the end of Market Street/start of Princess Street (between Paddy Power and H & T Pawnbrokers) will not be in use. Pedestrians will need to use the Queen Street pedestrian crossing (between H & T Pawnbrokers and JobCentrePlus) and then the pedestrian crossing (between the JobCentrePlus and Wolverhampton Homes).
