Christmas 2017

Bus, train and tram services will operate different service levels over the Christmas and New Year period.

This information listed is the latest we have from bus, train and tram operators, further updates will be made to this page as we receive additional information. Please keep checking back in case things have changed.

Monday 18 December - Friday 22 December


All operators will operate their normal weekday timetable, with some minor variations.  


Stagecoach will operate a university holiday timetable.


 


Saturday 23 December


All operators will operate their normal Saturday timetable


 


Christmas Eve, Sunday 24 December


Operators will operate a Sunday timetable, with the following last buses:


National Express will operate their normal Sunday service with last buses at approximately 11.00pm from city/town/district centres. Please note that last buses will be earlier than normal on most services. Night buses will not operate.


Arriva will operate a normal Sunday service with early finishes in Cannock area.


Stagecoach will operate their normal Sunday service with most journeys, including service U17, finishing between 8.00pm and 9.00pm.


 


Christmas Day, Monday 25 December


No bus services will operate.


 


Boxing Day, Tuesday 26 December


National Express will operate a Sunday service between 8.00am and 6.00pm, with the higher frequency routes operating their usual finish time.


However, the following services that usually operate on a Sunday will not operate:



  • Service 5 – Tile Hill – Pool Meadow – Coventry Arena

  • Service 1 – Five Ways – Acocks Green

  • Service 27 – Hawkesley – Maypole

  • Service 96 – Chelmsley Wood – Erdington

  • Service 35 – Walsall – Aldridge

  • Service 62/62A – Wolverhampton – Perton

  • Service 77 – Walsall – Sutton Coldfield


Central Buses will operate service X11


Diamond Bus will operate service 4H between 8.30am and 6.00pm and service 002 between 7.15am and 5.00pm (this includes additional morning journeys).


Diamond will also operate services 13, 19, 26A, 36, 55, 82, 208, 226, 229, 243, 257, 530 to Sunday timetables between the usual start of service until approximately 6.40pm.


Additionally, Diamond Bus will operate service 3A (Walsall – Brownhills) usually operated by Arriva between the usual start of service until approximately 6.00pm.


Arriva no service, however Diamond Bus will operate service 3A (Walsall – Brownhills) as above.


All other operators will operate no services.


 


Wednesday 27 December, Thursday 28 December and Friday 29 December   


National Express will operate a Saturday service, with some extra morning journeys. Night buses will operate.


Diamond Bus will operate a Saturday service, although services 288, X30, X31 will operate the usual Monday to Friday timetable.


Johnsons will operate a Saturday service on services 42, 87 and 150. Service X20 will operate the usual Monday to Friday timetable.


Stagecoach will operate a Saturday service, although some later journeys on service X17 will not operate.


iGo will operate a Saturday timetable, although service 89 will operate its usual Monday to Friday timetables.


Central Buses will operate a Saturday timetable, although service 108 and service X16 will operate to their usual Monday to Friday timetable.


First will operate a Monday to Friday service.


Walsall Community Transport will operate their usual Monday to Friday timetables.


All other operators will operate a Saturday service.  


Saturday 30 December


All operators will operate a Saturday service.


 


New Year’s Eve, Sunday 31 December


Operators will operate a Sunday timetable, with the following last buses:


National Express will operate a normal Sunday daytime and evening service.


Arriva will operate a normal Sunday service with early finishes in Cannock area. Within the West Midlands the following last buses will operate:



  • Service 2E – from Wallsall 6.10pm, from Cannock 5.25pm

  • Service 76A – from Wolverhampton (to Stafford) 3.38pm, from Wolverhampton (to Penkridge) 5.38pm from Stafford 4.38pm


Stagecoach will operate their normal Sunday service with most journeys, including service U17, finishing between 8.00pm and 9.00pm.


 


New Year’s Day, Monday 1 January


Most operators will operate a Sunday timetable with the following exceptions:


National Express will operate a Sunday service until 6.00pm with the higher frequency routes operating until their usual finish time.


Services in Coventry will operate to a special timetable with higher frequency routes operating between 9.00am – 6.00pm.


Arriva will not operate any services, with the exception of service 3A (Walsall – Brownhills).


Stagecoach will not operate any services.


 


Tuesday 2 January 2017


Most bus services will operate their normal timetable.


National Express Coventry 



  • Tuesday 2 to Friday 5 January 2018 - a Saturday service with some early morning extra journeys - Services 11 and 12 will be operating a Holiday Saturday service

  • Saturday 6 January 2018 normal Saturday service - Services 11 and 12 will be operating a Holiday Saturday service


Ring and Ride Services


Monday 18 December – Saturday 23 December


A normal service will operate.


Christmas Eve, Sunday 24 December


A normal Sunday service will operate (book your trip by Friday 22 December).


Christmas Day


No service.


Boxing Day, Tuesday 26 December


Ring and Ride service will operate between 9.30am and 4.30pm (book your trip on Saturday 23 December).


Wednesday 27 December


A normal service will operate (book your trip on Saturday 23 December).


Thursday 28 December


A normal service will operate (book your trip on Wednesday 27 December).


Friday 29 December


A normal service will operate (book your trip on Thursday 28 December).


Saturday 30 December


A normal service will operate (book your trip on Friday 29 December).


New Year’s Eve, Sunday 31 December


A normal Sunday service will operate (book your trip by Friday 29 December).


New Year’s Day, Monday 1 January


No service.


Tuesday 2 January 2017


Normal service resumes (book your trip by Saturday 30 December).

Network Rail is implementing some significant improvement works this Christmas and a reduced service will run from 24 December until 2 January across most lines through Birmingham New Street. A normal service will operate from the 3 January 2018.


Changes to train times


We have listed below the lines and services that are affected by engineering works. Other train operators may be running to different timetables so please check before travelling at nationalrail.co.uk


Please note from 10 December 2017 train services in the West Midlands will be operated by West Midlands Trains.


Traveling Tuesday 2 January?


Engineering works will still be taking place on some routes and trains will be running to amended timetables. Please check before you travel and expect services to be busier than normal.


London Midland Services


18 to 23 December - A normal service will operate


Christmas Eve - a Sunday service will run on most routes, but services will finish earlier than usual.


Christmas Day and Boxing Day - no services will operate across the rail network.


Birmingham New Street - Walsall - Rugeley Trent Valley


24 December - buses will replace trains between Birmingham New Street and Rugeley Trent Valley to an amended timetable.


27 December - 2 January - trains will run to an amended timetable.


Replacement bus stop locations:



  • Rugeley Trent Valley - in the station car park.

  • Rugeley Town - at the public bus stop near the Wharf Road / Brereton Road junction.

  • Hednesford - at the public bus stops on either side of Cannock Road.

  • Cannock - on either side of Lichfield Road by the railway bridge.

  • Landywood - at the public bus stops either side of Landywood Lane, near to the pedestrian crossing.

  • Bloxwich North - in the lay-by on Cresswell Crescent outside the former 'Eagle Pub'.

  • Bloxwich - at the public bus stop on Croxdene Avenue (one stop for both directions)

  • Walsall - on Station Street outside the entrance to the NCP car park.

  • Stadium - on either side of Bescot Crescent by the entrance to the car park.

  • Tame Bridge Parkway - by the green railings in the station car park.

  • Hamstead - on Old Walsall Road on the bridge over the railway.

  • Perry Barr - at the public bus stop on Birchfield Road near the station entrance (one stop for both directions).

  • Witton - at the public bus stop on Witton Road, under the railway bridge by the entrance to the Walsall-bound platform (one stop in both directions). Should be one stop for both directions

  • Aston - at the public bus stop on Lichfield Road, under the railway bridge by the entrance to the Walsall-bound platform (one stop for both directions).

  • Duddeston - on Duddeston Mill Road near the junction with Melvina Road.

  • Birmingham New Street - in the lay-by outside TK Maxx


Redditch - Birmingham New Street - Lichfield Trent Valley


27 - 30 December - trains will run every 20 minutes


31 December & 1 January - trains will run every 30 minutes


Going back to work on 2 January?



  • Trains will run every 20 minutes

  • Trains will be very busy on this day.


Birmingham New Street - Northampton - London Euston


Buses will replace trains between Rugby and Northampton all day on 27 December and until 1200 on 28 December.


27 December - 2 January



  • A reduced train service will run between Birmingham New Street and Birmingham International.

  • Trains between Birmingham New Street and London Euston will run to amended timetables.


Replacement bus stop locations:



  • Rugby - outside the front of the station by the short stay car park.

  • Long Buckby - at the entrance to the station car park on Station Road.

  • Northampton - in the turning circle in the car park on the side of the station building.


Birmingham New Street - Wolverhampton (via local stations)


27 December - 2 January


Buses will replace trains between Birmingham New Street and Wolverhampton to calling at all stations.


A reduced train service will run non-stop between Birmingham New Street and Wolverhampton via an alternative route.


Midland Metro will be operating again from Wolverhampton to Grand Central from the 10 December. You may wish to consider this for your journeys however ticket acceptance will not be in place and you will need to pay for these journeys. 


Change at Wolverhampton for trains to and from Shrewsbury.


Replacement bus stop locations:



  • Wolverhampton - in the car park at the front of the station.

  • Coseley - on Havacre lane by the entrance to the Wolverhampton-bound platform.

  • Tipton - in the lay-by at the front of the station car park.

  • Dudley Port - at the public bus stops either side of A461 Dudley Port by the railway bridge.

  • Sandwell & Dudley - at the public bus stop on Bromford Road by the station entrance (one stop for both directions)

  • Smethwick Galton Bridge - at the public bus stop on Oldbury Road at the front of the station.

  • Smethwick Rolfe Street - at the public bus stops either side of Rolfe street in front of the main station building.

  • Birmingham New Street - on Smallbrook Queensway outside TK Maxx


27 - 30 December - an amended train timetable will run between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury only.


31 December  - no London Midland services on this route due to Sunday timetable in operation. Arriva Trains Wales will run a Sunday level of service.


1 January - no London Midland services on this route due to Sunday timetable in operation. Arriva Trains Wales will run an hourly service calling at Shrewsbury, Wellington, Telford Central and Wolverhampton ONLY.  There will be no services at Bilbrook, Codsall, Albrighton, Cosford, Shifnal or Oakengates on this day.


2 January -  an amended train timetable will run between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury only.        


Birmingham New Street - Wolverhampton - Shrewsbury


A reduced train service will run non-stop between Birmingham New Street and Wolverhampton via an alternative route and buses will replace trains at all local intermediate stations.


Birmingham - Wolverhampton - Liverpool


27 December - an hourly train service will run as far as Liverpool South Parkway. Change to Merseyrail services for Liverpool city centre.


28 December - 2 January - An hourly train service will run to and from Liverpool Lime Street.        


Trains will run non-stop between Birmingham New Street and Wolverhampton via an alternative route and buses will replace trains at all local intermediate stations.

Using rail replacement buses:



  • If your journey involves using rail replacement buses your journey will take longer than usual

  • If there are ticket purchasing facilities available, you must buy a rail ticket before boarding.

  • Buses are unable to carry heavy luggage, bicycles, prams or animals (other than registered assistance dogs).


If you have an advance ticket for a specific service, please ensure you board your booked trains as services are expected to be very busy over the Christmas period.

Christmas Eve – Services will finish earlier than usual


Christmas Day and Boxing Day – No services will operate.


27 December – 30 December –Services between Wolverhampton and Birmingham will divert and not call at Sandwell & Dudley. Rail Replacement services will be in operation.


News Year Eve - Services will finish earlier than usual


New Years Day - Services will start later than usual


2 January - Services between Wolverhampton and Birmingham will divert and not call at Sandwell & Dudley. Rail Replacement services will be in operation.


3 January – A normal service resumes.


 


Chiltern Railways


Sunday 24 December 2017 (Christmas Eve) - An amended Sunday timetable will operate, with an earlier-than-usual finish.


Monday 25 December (Christmas Day) – No Chiltern Railways services are running


Tuesday 26 December (Boxing day) - No Chiltern Railways services will operate in the West Midlands.


Wednesday 27 December 2017 -An amended Saturday timetable will operate.


Thursday 28 December 2017 -An amended Saturday timetable will operate.


Friday 29 December 2017 -An amended Saturday timetable will operate.


Sunday 31 December 2017 (New Year's Eve) -An amended Sunday timetable will operate.


Monday 1 January (New Year’s Day) – An amended Sunday service will run.


Tuesday 2 January – Normal Monday to Friday service will run.
