Here are some great tips and advice that you should consider when making part of your journey by bike.

Choose your bicycle

  • If you plan on commuting to and from your local rail or bus station and to use the cycle parks then we recommend you invest in a cheap bicycle but also budget for at least two good quality locks.
  • If you have an old bicycle lying around the house or garden then dust it off, clear away the rust, check the tyres, brakes and lights are working and you're ready to go. Don't forget to wear a helmet and bright reflective clothing.

Police advice: Think about it, if you love your expensive bicycle then a thief will too. So if you're thinking about cycling anywhere and leaving your bike behind for long periods then use a bike which is road worthy but is also less expensive.

Park your bike safely

Whether you are parking a car or parking a bicycle you should apply similar principles when thinking about security. When parking your car you wouldn't leave your doors and windows open. Nor would you leave your car keys in the ignition or keep valuables on display, right?

  • Use 2 good quality locks. Hardened Steel D Locks are recommended as a minimum standard. It is worth spending proportionally more on a lock for a more expensive bike
  • Lock the frame and both wheels high up on the cycle stand to prevent the locks from being brought down to the ground
  • Make the lock and bike hard to manoeuvre when parked
  • Remove smaller parts and accessories that can't be secured, especially lights, pumps and quick-release saddles
  • Don't leave your bike overnight
  • Bicycles are left at cycle parks at owners risk

Police advice: Secure your bike to cycle provisions provided. Do not leave your bike chained to pipes or road signs. Remember that thieves can remove drainpipes and lift bikes off signposts.
