Eastside Birmingham City Centre

The Eastside of Birmingham City Centre is set to be transformed through a multimillion pound regeneration project, led by Birmingham City Council, to improve housing, office and leisure space. 

With the extension of the metro line, the opening of HS2 Curzon Street Station and the introduction of new Sprint routes, the area will be one of the most connected parts of city and become a better area to live, work, study and visit.

Whist work takes place, you may experience disruption to your journey. There will be changes to the way you travel to and from some parts of the city centre. Please plan ahead and  remember to check your journey regularly.

What's happening?

The work on the much-anticipated Birmingham Eastside Metro Extension has progressed significantly since spades hit the ground in 2020, with main construction activity in Lower Bull Street and Digbeth High Street now completed.

The scheme will progress from Sunday 7 April 2024 when track works will get underway in Moor Street Queensway, Birmingham. These works are expected to last until approximately Autumn 2024.

Rest assured these works will not impact your journey if you usually use the existing tram line. However, there is disruption due to works in Wednesbury which may affect your journey. To find out more information about that disruption click here.

Bus Stop Changes:

From Sunday 7th April until autumn 2024 approximately, there will be changes to bus stops around Birmingham City Centre as Metro extension works begin on Moor Street Queensway.

If you usually get on or off your bus by New Street Station, Moor Street Station, or Priory Queensway, in Birmingham City Centre, your bus route is still operating, and you are still able to reach your destination. However, the stop you need to use to get off or on the bus may have changed. Please plan ahead and remember to check your journey regularly using the TfWM Journey Planner.

Pedestrian access to the nearby station will be maintained throughout the work, although please note that crossing points across the Queensway may change as works progress.

You will still be able to get to where you need to go, but consider the following:

The key travel advice is as follows:

• If you usually get on or off your bus by Moor Street Station, New Street Station, or Priory Queensway; your bus route is still operating and you are still able to get it, close to where you usually do. However, the stop you need to get on and off at may have changed.

• Some bus stops will be temporarily relocated until Moor Street Queensway works are complete; use the updated city centre bus stop map to see where your new stop is.

• Your bus stop may have changed so plan ahead; check your journey in both directions of travel.

• Familiarise yourself with the changes to your stop; another route/stop might suit your destination better.

• Put your safety first - much of Moor Street Queensway will be a construction site, for your own safety use the designated walking routes to get to your destination. These are signposted clearly.
